In addition to real estate investing, consulting and speaking I’m a musician, award-winning graphic artist and owner of multiple businesses. I live in Colorado with my husband, Richard, who is an entrepreneur and an attorney.
I fell in love with real estate investing in 2004 when my husband and I realized that we could buy a beautiful 1890 Victorian home then keep our former home as a cash flowing residential rental property. Instead of selling the house, we rented our home to a group of college girls and loved the experience. The best part is that we actually lowered our monthly expenses significantly (we even moved our two offices home saving thousands a year!). And so began my real estate investing journey, including working with extraordinary real estate business mentors.
After turning our personal residence into a rental property I had the real estate investing bug. I have purchased single-family properties and multifamily properties across the country—some of the properties I renovated and flipped and some are holds (income rental properties). Just before writing my book Invest In Apartment Buildings: Profit Without The Pitfalls, I completely renovated and repositioned a brick three-story 29-unit apartment building. I sold that property at the end of 2011. During the past decade I’ve partnered in other deals and have been active in a residential development just north of Puerto Vallarta Mexico (now stalled and waiting on a return to positive thoughts about the viability of traveling and residing in Mexico—it’s a long story). I’ve consistently doubled my net worth throughout the years.
I’m an active multifamily and single-family real estate investor today.
Investing in residential real estate, including multifamily properties and apartment buildings, has become a 24/7 preoccupation. It’s a marriage of my two passions: mentoring and growing wealth through the acquisition of appreciating assets.
But what stands out is that along the way I’ve put much of my time and energy into teaching others–from beginners to professional real estate investors with millions–how to be wise investors without following what is often the incorrect advice of the “gurus” of the moment.
