Survey of Americans’ Attitudes Towards Real Estate Investing

DENVER, CO – FEBRUARY 03, 2013 – For Immediate Release

New America’s Research Group/Bradley-Banta Real Estate Investing Survey Reveals:

Real Estate Investing Bright Spot in Economy

Of consumers/households making $50,000 or more nearly one in five have invested in real estate. Of those who have not invested, 20% said they did so only because they don’t know enough about it.

Of those who have invested in real estate, 57% invested in residential real estate (not including primary residence); nearly 30% in land and nearly 10% in apartment buildings.

Three out of four consumers/households are individual investors.

According to an America’s Research Group/Theresa Bradley-Banta Real Estate Consultancy Survey released today, real estate is the bright spot in the economy, supported by current reports that home prices are off to their strongest start in seven years, as housing begins to power the economy. And much of this seems to be powered by the new American investor.

According to the Survey, of those earning $50,000 or more, nearly one in five have invested in real estate (outside of their primary residences). Of those who have not invested, nearly 20% said it was only because they didn’t know enough about it.

“What we’re seeing in the investment field,” said Theresa Bradley-Banta, Founder, Theresa Bradley-Banta Real Estate Consultancy, “is that consumers are investing in real estate in increasing numbers in spite of the recession. Only 9% of those surveyed said they thought investing in investment real estate was too risky. Greater that 41% said they would invest if they had enough money.”

“What this shows is that the American attitude towards investing in real estate is broadening and more and more simply want to know more about it—and once they do, what we’re seeing is that they are diving in. This is clearly the bright spot on the consumer map right now, period. And it’s drawing a larger and larger percentage of households.”

The Survey also reveals that:
[list type=check_list]

  • 57% invested in residential properties;
  • 28% in land;
  • and almost 10% in apartment buildings.
  • 36% found out about the properties by seeing them;
  • 27% heard about them from friends;
  • and only 18% from a broker.
  • Nearly 75% put the deal(s) together themselves;
  • 22% with a partner;
  • and only 1% with a group.

“Americans are lone rangers when it comes to real estate investing,” said Bradley-Banta. “What I’m seeing is that there is an increase in investing overall—thanks to the economic shift and the opportunity it affords. And the more they know, the more they invest—and want to invest.

“This is not the real estate bubble (and subsequent collapse) of the past decade,” said Bradley-Banta. “Just the fact that American households are telling us that they don’t know enough is a major change from a decade ago when everyone I knew just about was investing in real estate—and much of it without the knowledge they needed. The new American investor is wiser and smarter thanks to the recession; moreover, this is not a “bubble” in the sense that everyone has to grab at the market now or else. There are incredible deals out there now, yes, but anytime is the right time to invest in real estate—as long as you have the knowledge to do so—which the new American investor knows.”
